December 2018

Dear Curtis Family,

We hope that you and your family had a wonderful Thanksgiving holiday. The end of the first semester is fast approaching. We want to congratulate Mallory Adams on being selected as our Student of the Year! Mallory is an outstanding young person, and we are proud of her accomplishments. Mallory will represent Curtis elementary at the parish level, and we wish her all the best.

Schools across Louisiana recently received school performance scores (SPS) and letter grades. This year, the state increased the standards tied to school letter grades. Curtis Elementary’s results from 2017-2018 show a School Performance Score of 70.8 (C). We are pleased that our Student Progress Score, which measures the rate at which students are progressing towards mastering the key skills needed in the next grade is 83.5 (B). Teachers are using a challenging curriculum, and it remains our goal to motivate students towards higher conceptual learning. Together, we will continue to meet the challenges and higher standards that we face in order for each student to meet his/her fullest potential today…and in the future!

We have several activities planned for December. We are very proud of all of our fifth graders who will be recognized  at Starbase graduation on Monday, December 17th at 1:00. Mrs. Wynn and the fourth graders are in the middle of practicing for our annual holiday performance, Jingle Bell Jukebox! The date and times are listed here in the newsletter, so we hope you can join us for this special presentation. We will also have classroom holiday parties on Friday, December 14th at 2:00. Students may wear pajamas or their favorite holiday shirt and jeans that day, whichever they choose. (Students may wear shoes to school/home and wear slippers during the day with pajamas.) We are collecting canned goods and nonperishable food items for the Bossier Sheriff’s food drive until December 7th. These food items will be placed in baskets and delivered in time for the holidays to Bossier Parish families in need. We are also collecting gently used and new “Coats for Kids” in the container located in the front lobby. Porter’s will inspect and clean all coats donated in order to help keep the children of Shreveport-Bossier warm all winter!

Schools will be closed from December 24 through January 7th. Students return on Tuesday, January 8th.

Wishing you and your family joy and peace this holiday season!

Terri Ann Bird
